maimai GreeN, also known as 超, released on July 11, 2013, was the first full version upgrade for the maimai arcade series — a major overhaul rather than an incremental "Plus" update. The game's level-based progression system was replaced by a skill-based rating system (scored from 0 to 12, with two-decimal precision) derived from a player's best and recent performances. An in-game currency called maimile was introduced, earned through play and usable on collectible frames, nameplates, and maiChallenges. Two social systems debuted: the maiFriend system, which automatically registers players you play with and awards daily maimile bonuses based on friend activity, and maiNeighbourhood, which grants bonus maimile for playing after another player on the same cabinet. The difficulty scale was expanded from 10 to 12 levels, introducing the game's first level 11 and level 12 charts, and a new achievement rate system displayed play performance as a percentage — with scores above 100% achievable through frame-precise BREAK note timing.

The visual identity shifted to a light green-on-white color scheme, with the in-game UI adopting the ITC Bauhaus font for combo counts and achievement rates. The guide speed range was expanded from 1–6 to 1–9, and new mirror modes (vertical flip and 180° rotate) were added. Genre folders were reorganized: the ANIME/GAME combined category was split into separate folders, the J-POP label was renamed to POPS, and the OVERSEAS category was folded into POPS. The Touhou Project debuted as an entirely new genre — the first rhythm game to feature Touhou songs with accompanying character videos. Quality-of-life improvements included sortable and filterable song lists (by level, rank, version, genre, and recording eligibility), a two-handed Slide Skip gesture for quickly jumping between filter categories, and a toggle between Hit Songs and All Songs. Break note scoring was refined into frame-precise tiers, and sound effect options were adjusted so that turning off sound effects no longer silenced FULL COMBO and ALL PERFECT announcements.
