Overview
MYTHOS is a high-energy instrumental collaboration track built around a fusion of techno, classical piano, and live violin. Composed by Cranky (Hiroshi Watanabe), the piece features two high-profile instrumentalists from the Nico Nico Douga scene: pianist marasy, known for his virtuosic "played it" performance videos and later work as a VocaloP, and violinist Teppei-sensei (Okada Teppei), a soloist who has performed with the Tokyo Philharmonic and Nagoya Philharmonic orchestras. The jacket and in-game movie were created by OTAS.
The song was commissioned for SEGA's Tokyo Joypolis digital-ride attraction HALFPIPE TOKYO and was simultaneously added to maimai GreeN PLUS on April 10, 2014. Its title derives from the Greek word "mythos" (μῦθος), meaning a traditional story, legend, or myth, fitting for a track that opens with an authoritative spoken-word passage before erupting into a dramatic blend of synthesized beats, piano runs, and soaring violin lines.
In maimai, MYTHOS debuted as a limited unlock requiring 30,000 maimile. It transitioned to a 30 music ticket unlock in maimai ORANGE and became freely available by default starting with maimai ORANGE PLUS. Over successive version updates, the chart levels have been revised multiple times, with the Master chart eventually rising to level 14, a demanding arrangement known for its dense Tap patterns and wide Slide formations, designed by the veteran charter mai-Star. The Expert chart, jointly credited to Jack and 譜面-100号 (and earlier to the pseudonym "合作だよ", meaning "it's a collaboration"), also saw significant level inflation across versions.

Trivia
- Despite the Greek-inspired title, Cranky himself joked that the correct reading of MYTHOS is "ニーソックスカッコシロ" (nīsokkusu kakkoshiro, "knee socks, white"), quipping "don't get it wrong." The pun plays on the Japanese pronunciation of "MYTHOS" sounding similar to "maitosu" which can be twisted into "knee socks" terminology.
- MYTHOS was created as a tie-in track for HALFPIPE TOKYO, a digital-ride attraction at SEGA's Tokyo Joypolis indoor theme park. The music was used in both the ride and the arcade game simultaneously.
- The soundtrack booklet for MYTHOS includes an English spoken-word sample: 'This is Mythos / This is Tradition / Fables and legends / Enlightened with wisdom / Gods and Goddesses / Men and Beast / Hope and Fear / UNITE!'
- Before maimai DX PRiSM PLUS, the EXPERT chart was credited to the pseudonym '合作だよ' (gassaku da yo, meaning 'it's a collaboration'). After PRiSM PLUS it was formally credited as 'Jack vs 譜面-100号'.
- marasy (まらしぃ) commented that for the latter half of the piano part, Cranky told him to 'play freely,' leading to an energetic, improvisational feel in the song's climax.
- Teppei-sensei remarked that the song felt so good to play that he wanted to stand next to the actual arcade cabinet and perform live alongside whoever was playing the game.
- An excerpt from MYTHOS is sampled in 'The Sacred Story', a song by VILA featured in the mobile rhythm game Cytus, which also samples another maimai original track, Saika.
- The song's genre classification within maimai has shifted several times: initially categorized as JOYPOLIS, it moved to ORIGINAL & JOYPOLIS, then ORIGINAL, and finally settled under the maimai genre starting with maimai でらっくす PLUS.
