Overview

We Gonna Party is a high-energy RAVE track by Cranky, head of the Feline Groove label, originally produced for SEGA's HALFPIPE TOKYO digital-real attraction at Tokyo Joypolis. When it launched in maimai PLUS on December 13, 2012, it marked Cranky's first-ever commission for a Japanese arcade rhythm game, a milestone for an artist already known internationally through the BMS (Be-Music Source) scene and as an arranger for TM NETWORK. The song features rapid-fire vocals and rap delivery by Pico, whose lyrics are entirely a constructed language invented during recording, giving the track an esoteric, incantatory quality that Cranky himself later described as resembling "Eroim Esseim" chants. We Gonna Party holds several distinctions within the maimai series: it was the shortest regular song in the entire library until Takemoto Piano CM Song arrived years later, and it is the only HALFPIPE TOKYO track from the original maimai lineup to receive an extended version (included on Cranky's album Rave-SLave 2017). The chart is known for its "toothless" (歯抜け) arrangement, a note layout that emphasizes the song's rap and vocal sampling patterns, making it surprisingly difficult to reach S rank even with a Full Combo. A Re:MASTER chart was added on October 23, 2020, celebrating the release of the maimai ALL PERFECT COLLECTION soundtrack. We Gonna Party also spawned a direct sequel, We Gonna Journey, and a remix, We Gonna Party -Feline Groove Mix-, both appearing in CHUNITHM.

Trivia

  • We Gonna Party was Cranky's first commission for a Japanese arcade rhythm game. Prior to maimai, Cranky, head of the Feline Groove label, was known internationally in the BMS doujin scene and as an arranger for TM NETWORK.
  • The song originated as the theme for HALFPIPE TOKYO, a digital-real attraction at SEGA's Tokyo Joypolis. Its genre classification within that attraction is RAVE.
  • According to Cranky's tweet from 2012, the track originally repurposed rap sampling voices from his earlier Joypolis commission Streak, which led to a retake during production.
  • The lyrics are a constructed language invented on the spot by vocalist Pico. Cranky later recalled seeing a sheet full of mysterious pseudo-mantra-like text during recording and choosing not to ask questions.
  • We Gonna Party was the shortest regular song in the entire maimai series from its release until the addition of Takemoto Piano CM Song in maimai でらっくす Splash PLUS.
  • Of all the HALFPIPE TOKYO songs included in the original maimai, We Gonna Party is the only one that received a long version, featured on Cranky's 2017 album Rave-SLave 2017 and later on the maimai ALL PERFECT COLLECTION soundtrack.
  • A direct sequel titled We Gonna Journey appears in CHUNITHM. A remix by Morrigan feat. Lily, We Gonna Party -Feline Groove Mix-, also appears in CHUNITHM AIR PLUS.
  • The Re:MASTER chart, added on October 23, 2020, was the first Standard Re:MASTER distributed since maimai でらっくす launched, arriving approximately 1 year, 3 months, and 16 days after the previous Re:MASTER (39).
  • The song's in-game genre has been recategorized multiple times: originally JOYPOLIS, then ORIGINAL & JOYPOLIS, then ORIGINAL, and finally maimai since でらっくす PLUS.
  • The jacket art was updated in maimai でらっくす Splash to include the song title, replacing the original jacket which had only the artwork.
  • The Expert chart was designed by 譜面-100号 (Fumen -100 gou), the Master chart by ニャイン (Nyain), and the Re:MASTER chart by 小鳥遊さん (Takanashi-san).
