Overview
炎歌 -ほむらうた- (Homura Uta) is one of the most unusual tracks in the maimai library: a Showa-era style enka ballad written for a rhythm game. Composed by Hiro (Hiroshi Kawaguchi), known for his work on the Space Harrier, Hang-On, and Sonic series, the song grew out of a long-held personal ambition to write an enka piece. Hiro had felt that most video games had no natural place for the genre, but maimai's eclectic tracklist gave him the freedom to try something outside typical game music boundaries.
The result is a deliberate hybrid: traditional enka instrumentation, koto and shamisen-like sounds in the intro, emotive string writing, and heart-wrenching vocal melodies, is underpinned by a four-on-the-floor kick drum and synth-heavy arrangement, keeping the track playable as a rhythm game chart. Hiro brought in arranger Takeshi Kaneko, who had previously worked on Sega's SegaSaga soundtrack and, crucially, came from an enka background himself, to ensure the arrangement carried authentic enka flavor in the guitar and string obbligato parts. Vocals were handled by Aiko Moriyama (森山愛子), described in the game's soundtrack booklet as "the hope of the enka world," whose powerful delivery and controlled melisma define the song's emotional core.
炎歌 -ほむらうた- debuted in maimai PLUS in April 2013 as a STANDARD-chart-only track. Over the ensuing decade its Master chart was gradually re-rated upward from level 10 to 13+ as the game's difficulty landscape evolved. In June 2024, more than eleven years after its original release, the song received DX charts as part of maimai でらっくす BUDDiES PLUS, initially unlockable through Friend Matching Season 17 before becoming available by default later that year. The DX refresh also introduced a new jacket illustration, replacing the original visual, and the in-game video was updated to a still of that new jacket.

Trivia
- 炎歌 -ほむらうた- is a Showa-era enka (昭和演歌), a traditional Japanese ballad style, making it one of the very few enka tracks ever featured in a mainstream arcade rhythm game.
- Composer Hiro (Hiroshi Kawaguchi) had wanted to write an enka song for years but felt most video games had no venue for the genre. He chose maimai specifically because its genre-agnostic tracklist could accommodate something outside standard game music.
- Unlike a pure enka piece, the song uses a four-on-the-floor bass drum (4つ打ち) and synthesizer-based production to keep it viable as a rhythm game chart, a compromise Hiro himself noted in his artist comment.
- Arranger Takeshi Kaneko (金子剛) came from an enka background, which is why Hiro specifically brought him onto the project to handle the guitar and string obbligato parts, lending the track authentic enka phrasing.
- Vocalist Aiko Moriyama (森山愛子) is described in the maimai soundtrack booklet as '演歌界のホープ' (the hope of the enka world). Hiro had wanted her to sing one of his songs for some time and considered the collaboration a 'dream pairing.'
- The Standard Master chart originally launched at level 10 in maimai PLUS (2013) and was progressively re-rated upward over nine version updates, finally settling at 13+ from FESTIVAL PLUS onward, reflecting both the chart's enduring difficulty and maimai's evolving level standards.
- DX charts were added over eleven years after the song's original release, in maimai でらっくす BUDDiES PLUS (June 2024). They were initially locked behind Friend Matching Season 17 (300 SP reward) before becoming generally available from Season 20 onward.
- The song received a completely new jacket illustration in maimai でらっくす, replacing the artwork from the original PLUS-era release. The in-game music video was also replaced with a still image of the new jacket.
- In the Chinese version (舞萌) and Asian English versions of maimai, the song's title is displayed as 'HOMURA-UTA' and the artist credit reads 'Hiro / Aiko Moriyama' rather than the Japanese-styled 'Hiro/森山愛子.'
- The song's in-game genre classification has shifted over time: originally labeled ORIGINAL, then ORIGINAL & JOYPOLIS in the PiNK through FiNALE era, and finally settled under the maimai category from でらっくす PLUS onward.
- The lyrics, written by Katsumi Tomono (友野かつみ), known for anime character song work, follow a narrator watching a loved one's shadow move, unable to force a smile, as a flame ignites in their heart and they plead for the wind and rain to extinguish it, classic enka imagery of unrequited love and burning emotion.
