ぴぴぱぷぅ！ (Pi Pi Pa Puu!) is an original maimai commission composed by Hiro (Hiroshi Kawaguchi) with lyrics by Katsumi Tomono and vocals by Akari Koyama. The song debuted in maimai PLUS on May 9, 2013, and has since appeared in every subsequent version of the game, a longevity matched by few other tracks from the PLUS era. The vocalist was discovered through a stroke of serendipity. While appearing as a guest on the radio program 電磁マシマシ (Denji Mashimashi) hosted by composer Sano Denji, Hiro happened to hear Koyama's voice in the studio and decided on the spot that she was the right fit. Koyama, a singer-songwriter who performs on the chromatone, a distinctive electronic wind instrument, delivers a playful, fairy-tale vocal performance that Hiro described as perfectly matching her unique worldview. The song's PV features an idol-style character dancing against colorful, girlish motifs that synchronize with the upbeat music. The title ぴぴぱぷぅ！ carries no particular meaning; Hiro has stated that he simply wanted listeners to feel happy when hearing the song. Despite its cheerful, lightweight exterior, the track holds one of the most storied level-revision histories in the maimai series. Its Master chart began at level 9 in maimai PLUS, climbed as high as level 13 during the UNiVERSE+ and FESTiVAL era, and settled at 12+ (constant 12.9) from PRiSM+ onward. The BASIC chart also made history as the only BASIC-level chart ever re-rated in maimai GreeN. The song runs approximately 2:14 and was originally classified under the ORIGINAL genre before being moved to the maimai category during the でらっくす PLUS update.
