Neko Biyori. (ネコ日和。) debuted on July 11, 2012 as one of the original songs available at the launch of the very first maimai arcade cabinet, making it one of the oldest tracks in the entire series. The song was composed and arranged by Takahiro Kai (credited simply as Kai), a Sega employee and guitarist, with lyrics written by voice actress and singer Hitomi Terakado. Vocals were handled by Arisa Noto, whose bright, youthful delivery perfectly captures the song's playful spirit. True to its feline theme, the track opens with cute meowing before launching into a bouncy 171 BPM dance beat accented by comical guitar riffs at key moments. The lyrics are written entirely from a cat's perspective, cheekily asserting stereotypical cat behavior, sleeping all day, being sensitive to hot food (猫舌 / nekojita, literally "cat tongue"), arching one's back, and swatting at hearts with "cat punches." The wordplay extends to the title itself, where ネコ (neko, cat) is combined with 日和 (biyori, weather) while the first lyric puns 寝子 (neko, sleeping cat) into the same reading. Kai has described the song's origin as a free-form commission from his mentor "Hiro", given total creative freedom, he intended to pour his inner passion into music, but the result unexpectedly became a cat song. This accidental theme became the first entry in maimai's "animal series," later followed by Inu Biyori. (犬日和。). Noto also choreographed and performed the dance seen in the original music video, which featured the silhouette of a cat-eared dancer against pink-and-yellow neon backdrops. Over its long lifecycle, Neko Biyori. has seen several notable changes. It received a new jacket illustration when maimai でらっくす launched, and its original animated video was replaced with a static jacket image. More than twelve years after its debut, the song finally received DX-format charts in maimai でらっくす PRiSM PLUS (April 2025), initially unlockable through Friend Matching Season 22, a testament to its enduring status as a nostalgic cornerstone of the maimai song library.
