Overview
ジングルベル is a maimai original arrangement of the globally recognized Christmas carol "Jingle Bells," produced by SEGA Sound Unit [H.] with vocals by Takenobu Mitsuyoshi. The song first appeared during the maimai location test in December 2011 under the working title "jingle bells [H.] Ver." and returned as a limited-time seasonal playable song during Christmas periods from 2012 through 2014 before becoming permanently available starting with the ORANGE PLUS update. The arrangement is a collaborative medley in which individual members of [H.] each contributed their own section: it opens with a heavy metal-inspired passage, shifts into a pastoral oboe-led melody, moves through a comedic interlude, and closes with a playful jazz-style finale. Mitsuyoshi matches this stylistic range, switching from his characteristic high-pitched shouting in the first half to a smooth, improvisational croon in the jazz section. The song's unusual release history, originally intended only for the location test but kept alive by fan demand, and its drastic stylistic shifts make it one of the more distinctive original tracks in the maimai library. Its chart designs also carry notable quirks: the Standard Re:Master chart doubles the effective play speed by halving slide-note standby time (effectively 200 BPM), while the DX Master chart (level 14.6) packs 302 Touch notes into 929 total, making it one of the most Touch-note-intensive charts in the DX series.

Trivia
- The song was originally created as a casual in-house project: SEGA Sound Unit [H.] members each arranged a Christmas song in their own style with only the BPM predetermined, then stitched the pieces together into a single medley. The full version was roughly four minutes long and was cut to about 1:25 for maimai.
- During the 2011 location test, the song was listed as "jingle bells [H.] Ver." The location test itself ran from December 23–25, coinciding with Christmas.
- From 2012 through 2014, ジングルベル was only playable during limited Christmas windows each year. It became permanently unlockable in maimai ORANGE PLUS (March 2015) and fully unconditional from maimai PiNK (December 2015) onward.
- The Standard Re:Master chart is effectively a 200 BPM chart despite the in-game BPM listing of 100. The designer halved the standby time of slide notes, doubling the effective speed at which players must react.
- The DX Master chart (designed by 舞舞10年ズ ~ファイナル~, or "Mai Mai 10 Years ~Final~") contains 302 Touch notes, over 32% of its 929-note total is Touch input, an exceptionally high ratio even among DX boss charts.
- The Standard Expert chart designer credit "譜面-100号" (Fumen -100 gou) is a pun referencing the song's 100 BPM.
- Both the Standard Master and Re:Master charts were designed by チャン@DP皆伝 (Chan@DP kaiden), a prolific maimai charter known for high-difficulty designs.
- Because of its original status as a limited-time seasonal song, ジングルベル has never been required for the 真極, 真神, or 真舞舞 name plates, even after it became permanently available. It does count toward the 覇者 and 舞プレート plates and the FESTiVAL 祭プレート.
- Before maimai ORANGE, the in-game artist credit was simply "[H.]" without the "SEGA Sound Unit" prefix.
- In Asian English versions of maimai the title is localized as "Jinglebell"; in the Chinese version (舞萌) it appears as "圣诞歌曲改编" (Christmas Song Adaptation).
- The arrangement appears in CHUNITHM and オンゲキ as well, where it is classified under POPS & ANIME rather than the maimai genre. The CHUNITHM ULTIMA chart (notecount 2,512) was a multi-designer collaboration with six contributors.
- A longer version of the arrangement featuring an introduction based on "Silent Night" appears on the maimai ALL PERFECT COLLECTiON soundtrack.
FAQ
- Who composed and arranged the maimai version of Jingle Bells?
- The original carol "Jingle Bells" was composed by James Lord Pierpont. The maimai arrangement was created by SEGA Sound Unit [H.], with each member arranging a different section of the medley. Vocals were performed by Takenobu Mitsuyoshi.
- When was ジングルベル added to maimai and how did its availability change over time?
- ジングルベル first appeared in the maimai location test in December 2011 under the title "jingle bells [H.] Ver." It was a limited-time Christmas seasonal song from 2012 through 2014, only playable during December windows each year. It became permanently unlockable after playing once starting in maimai ORANGE PLUS (March 2015) and fully unconditional from maimai PiNK (December 2015) onward. The DX charts were added later in maimai でらっくす FESTiVAL on December 23, 2022.
- What makes the Re:Master chart of ジングルベル different from other charts?
- The Standard Re:Master chart doubles the effective play speed by halving the standby time of slide notes. While the BPM is listed as 100, the chart plays as if it were 200 BPM, making timing significantly tighter than the displayed tempo suggests.
- Who designed the ジングルベル charts in maimai?
- Standard Expert was designed by 譜面-100号; Standard Master and Re:Master were both designed by チャン@DP皆伝. The DX Expert was designed by 翠楼屋, and the DX Master was designed by 舞舞10年ズ ~ファイナル~.
- What is the difficulty level of the ジングルベル DX Master chart?
- The DX Master chart is level 14+ with a difficulty constant of 14.6 and a total of 929 notes, including 302 Touch notes. The Standard Master is level 14 (constant 14.4) and the Standard Re:Master is also level 14 (constant 14.2).
- Does ジングルベル appear in other SEGA rhythm games?
- Yes, it was added to CHUNITHM in December 2015 and to オンゲキ in December 2019. In both games it is classified under POPS & ANIME, unlike maimai where it remains in the maimai category. The CHUNITHM version received an ULTIMA chart with 2,512 notes and the オンゲキ version has a LUNATIC chart.
- What is the musical structure of the SEGA Sound Unit [H.] arrangement?
- The arrangement is a multi-section medley. It opens with a heavy metal-style passage, transitions to a pastoral section with oboe as the lead melody, moves through a comedic interlude, and finishes with a jazz-style finale. Takenobu Mitsuyoshi's vocals shift accordingly, high-energy shouting in the first half and a smooth, playful delivery in the jazz section.
- Why is ジングルベル not required for certain maimai completion plates?
- Due to its original status as a limited-time seasonal release, ジングルベル was excluded from the requirements for the 真極, 真神, and 真舞舞 name plates even after becoming permanently available. It does, however, count toward the 覇者, 舞プレート, and FESTiVAL 祭プレート plates.
