Overview
おても☆Yan is a maimai original arrangement of おてもやん (Otemoyan), a traditional Japanese folk song from Kumamoto Prefecture, performed by longtime Sega vocalist Takenobu Mitsuyoshi (光吉猛修). It joined the maimai ORANGE lineup on February 19, 2015 as a shared song, initially only obtainable by tapping an Aime card at the Sega booth during JAEPO 2015, or by playing alongside someone who had already unlocked it. General availability arrived with the ORANGE PLUS update on March 19, 2015.
At 90 BPM, the track is the third entry in maimai's folk song arrangement series, following Tankō Bushi and So-ran Bushi. Mitsuyoshi's concept fused the traditional folk melody with a light J-rap / hip-hop sensibility popular in mid-2010s Japanese music, while preserving the original folk vocal delivery. Professional folk singers and a shinobue (Japanese transverse flute) player were brought in for the recording, with the shinobue's free-form improvisations adding an organic counterpoint to the beat-driven arrangement. Mitsuyoshi later noted that the tricky structure of the original Otemoyan made it difficult to arrange at first, but the addition of live instruments unlocked creative ideas that shaped the final version.
The song's in-game genre has shifted across maimai versions: originally categorized as VARIETY, it moved to ORIGINAL & JOYPOLIS, then ORIGINAL, and finally settled under the maimai genre in the DX era. Its MASTER chart, designed by 譜面-100号 (Fumen -100 gou), holds a notable place in maimai chart history as the first to feature very short hold notes, nicknamed HOLDTAP by the community, that behave like taps rather than holds, punishing any instinctive press-and-hold. This gimmick pattern later resurfaced in several other charts, most famously Axeria. The chart's level has been revised multiple times across version updates, rising from 11 in ORANGE to 13 in the current DX era.

Trivia
- おても☆Yan is based on おてもやん (Otemoyan), a traditional folk song from Kumamoto Prefecture on the island of Kyushu, the same region that gave rise to the Kumamon mascot, as Mitsuyoshi himself noted in his artist comment.
- The song was first distributed as a shared track at JAEPO 2015. Players who visited the Sega booth and scanned their Aime card on a dedicated reader would unlock it starting February 19, 2015, and could share it with others through co-op play. It became permanently unlocked for all players with the ORANGE PLUS update.
- The MASTER chart (designed by 譜面-100号) was the first in the maimai series to use extremely short hold notes, sometimes called HOLDTAP, that register as holds but are so brief they must be tapped. Holding them normally results in a GOOD judgement. The same designer would later reuse this technique in other charts, most notably Axeria.
- In Asian English versions of maimai, the song's title is romanized as OTEMO☆Yan and the artist as Takenobu Mitsuyoshi.
- Takenobu Mitsuyoshi is best known in the rhythm game community for his vocal performances in Sega arcade titles, including the Daytona USA series and numerous maimai original songs.
- The arrangement concept blended the traditional folk melody with a J-rap / hip-hop aesthetic popular in mid-2010s Japan, while keeping the original folk singing intact. Professional folk singers and a shinobue player were brought in, with the shinobue improvising freely to lend the track a live, organic feel.
- Mitsuyoshi commented that because Otemoyan itself has a structurally tricky, non-standard form, it was difficult to rework at first, but once the live shinobue and backing vocal interjections (合いの手) were added, ideas began to flow naturally.
- The song's genre classification changed multiple times across maimai versions: VARIETY (ORANGE), ORIGINAL & JOYPOLIS (PiNK through FiNALE), ORIGINAL (でらっくす), and finally maimai (でらっくす PLUS onward).
- A Basic chart at level 1 also existed in the ORANGE era (54 notes, no designer credited) but was removed in later versions, the truth data shows only the current four-chart set from Basic 4 onward.
- The Expert chart was designed by rioN, a prolific maimai charter known for many original and arrangement song charts across the series.
