After Burner is a swinging big-band jazz arrangement of the iconic theme from SEGA's 1987 arcade flight-combat game of the same name. The track was produced by Tokyo Active NEETs (東京アクティブNEETs), a doujin jazz circle well known in the rhythm-game community for their energetic brass-and-piano arrangements of video game music. Their version of After Burner was originally commissioned for composer Hiroshi Kawaguchi's 30th anniversary album "Thank you for listening!" (2015), where Kawaguchi, the original composer of the After Burner arcade soundtrack, curated a celebration of his career through new arrangements by various artists. Tokyo Active NEETs' arrangement lifts the arcade original's signature adrenaline-fueled melody and reimagines it with full jazz instrumentation: piano (Akai Ryuusei), bass (Aoi Setsuna), drums (Shobon), tenor sax (Kaworu Yamaishimoto), and trumpet (Karohi Mizunaki). The result is a bright, punchy 155 BPM track that balances the urgency of an arcade dogfight with the polish of a live jazz session. In maimai, After Burner debuted during the PiNK era as a Challenge Track, a limited-time unlockable, on February 18, 2016, and became a standard selectable song one month later. Its in-game genre has shifted across versions: originally categorized under "SEGA" (PiNK through FiNALE), it moved to "ORIGINAL" at the start of the DX era, and eventually settled into "GAME & VARIETY" from でらっくす PLUS onward. The Master chart, designed by 譜面-100号 at level 13.7, packs 915 notes into a dense, fast-paced layout that tests endurance and precision alike.
