Pretender is a pop ballad by Japanese band Official髭男dism (often romanized as Official HIGE DANdism), released as a single in April 2019. The track was composed and written by keyboardist and vocalist Satoshi Fujiwara, whose lyrics cast the narrator as a "pretender", someone playing a supporting role in a love story, aware that they will never be the destined partner. This bittersweet theme, carried by a gentle piano melody and a steady 92 BPM rhythm, resonated strongly with listeners in Japan. The song was selected as the opening theme for the 2019 film コンフィデンスマンJP -ロマンス編- (Confidence Man JP: Romance Chapter), the second theatrical installment of the popular Confidence Man JP comedy-drama franchise. The following year, Pretender made its rhythm-game debut in SEGA's maimai でらっくす Splash, launching on September 17, 2020. In maimai, the song's four DX charts span from a straightforward Basic (Lv2) to a technically demanding Master (Lv12+), with the Expert chart designed by シチミヘルツ (Shichimi Hertz) and the Master chart by はっぴー (Happy). The song also appeared in CHUNITHM PARADISE, another SEGA rhythm title. As a licensed pop track, Pretender had a limited lifespan in the maimai arcade lineup. It was removed from Japanese cabinets on March 23, 2023, and from Asian versions starting with the FESTiVAL edition, marking it as a time-limited addition to the series' catalog.
