The track first appeared in the BMS of Fighters 2009 (BOF2009) Be-Music Source song contest, where it placed 18th overall, and was later updated and ported to maimai DX on November 1st, 2019 as part of the Touhou Project collaboration area. The original 2009 version, simply titled Yakumo >>JOINT STRUGGLE, was themed around the BMS genre tag "SUKIMA TOUR", a reference to the gaps (隙間, sukima) associated with the Touhou character Yakumo Yukari, whom the song's title invokes.
