POP TEAM EPIC is the opening theme of the first season of the anime adaptation of Bukubu Okawa's surreal comedy manga ポプテピピック (Pop Team Epic). Performed by voice actress and singer Sumire Uesaka (上坂すみれ) and composed by Gin of the circle BUSTED ROSE, the track is a high-energy pop-rock anthem whose brash chorus and chaotic delivery mirror the absurdist humor of its source material, a series famous for meta-gags, two-character punchlines, and its distinctive 'hellshake' brand of comedy. The song arrived in maimai on June 21, 2018, as part of the MiLK PLUS update. The Standard chart set spans from Basic (Lv 4) to Re:Master (Lv 13+, constant 13.6), with the Re:Master designed by はっぴー featuring 630 total notes. DX charts were added later in maimai でらっくす on September 6, 2019, unlocked through the dedicated ポプテピピック Area before becoming generally available the following month. The DX Master chart, designed by 小鳥遊さん, stands out for its unusually heavy reliance on Touch notes, 222 out of 498 total, making it a sensor-intensive play that tests both rhythm and dexterity on the DX cabinet. The in-game jacket is a deliberate parody of the cover of Aphex Twin's 1996 album *Richard D. James Album*, substituting the electronic musician's face with that of Pipimi, one half of Pop Team Epic's main duo. The same artwork was used in CHUNITHM, which also featured the song. POP TEAM EPIC was removed from the maimai arcade series on March 18, 2021, due to lapsed licensing rights, and was never playable outside Japanese-region cabinets. A remix titled POP TEAM EPIC (REBROADCASTING MIX) was produced for the anime's rebroadcast but was not included in any rhythm game.
