BOKUTO is a cross-rhythm-game original song that first appeared in CHUNITHM AIR, SEGA's arcade rhythm game, before being ported to maimai DX in January 2020. The track is a collaboration between composer じーざすP (Jesus-P), known for his Vocaloid-driven electronic rock productions, and kradness, a versatile vocalist and track maker affiliated with the doujin music label EDP who also performs as part of the unit Quarks alongside camellia. The duo later reunited to create another maimai track, 絡めトリック利己ライザー. The song's lyrics narrate the story of an ordinary high school student whose after-school secret is exorcism. Armed with a punishment tool called "BOKUTO," he battles yokai and evil spirits while juggling self-deprecating observations ("I'm not a genius type, so I practice bit by bit every day") with esoteric Buddhist incantations like the kuji-in mantra 臨兵闘者皆陣列在前 (Rinpyō Tōsha Kai Jin Retsu Zai Zen). The lyrics also name-check 玄武 (Genbu, the Black Tortoise) from the Four Symbols constellation mythology, tying directly into the jacket art. The illustration features 黒亀 北斗 (Kurogame Hokuto/Bokuto), a black-turtle exorcist character whose name, read as either Hokuto or Bokuto, lends the song its title. In maimai, BOKUTO debuted under the ORIGINAL genre category but was moved to ONGEKI & CHUNITHM starting with the でらっくす PLUS update, reflecting its status as a song shared across SEGA's three major rhythm game franchises (CHUNITHM, maimai, and ONGEKI).
