Future is a cover song performed by ★STAR GUiTAR that shipped as one of the launch titles in the original maimai arcade game, which debuted in Japan on July 11, 2012. The track was composed and written by SiZK, a producer active in the Japanese dance-pop scene, and was later arranged as a cover for the maimai series. Despite arriving alongside dozens of other launch staples, Future has proven remarkably enduring, it has survived every major version migration from the original maimai hardware through the modern maimai DX line, making it one of the oldest continuously playable tracks in the game's library. The song's genre classification evolved alongside maimai's own categorization system: it debuted as J-POP, shifted to POPS during the GreeN and ORANGE releases, and eventually settled into POPS & ANIME starting with maimai PiNK, the label it retains today. Its chart roster grew well beyond the launch set. A Re:Master difficulty was added in maimai ORANGE PLUS (August 2015), initially unlockable with 50 music tickets before becoming freely available from PiNK onward. Designed by はっぴー (Happy), the Re:Master chart stands out for its dense concentration of Slide and Break notes, 128 Slides and 126 Breaks out of 496 total, giving it a visually and physically distinct feel from the song's lower difficulties. The Master chart, by contrast, was designed by 譜面-100号 (Fumen -100), a longtime maimai charter whose alias references the old 100-point scoring system. In maimai DX, Future received a completely new jacket illustration, and its original gameplay video was replaced with a static image of the updated artwork.
