Overview

FUJIN Rumble is a Japanese techno track by COSIO of TAITO's in-house sound team ZUNTATA, originally created for the GROOVE COASTER EX arcade rhythm game. It crossed over into maimai as part of the first Tenkaichi Otogesai (天下一音ゲ祭), a跨-corporate rhythm-game festival that pitted songs from TAITO, KONAMI, and Bandai Namco against each other in a block-tournament format. The four participating companies agreed on a "four classical elements" theme, and TAITO, represented by its roller-coaster-themed GROOVE COASTER series, was assigned wind (風). COSIO has recounted that he rode an actual roller coaster named after Mount Fuji, Japan's tallest mountain, at a theme park to capture the sensation of wind and speed, walking away with the immediate title idea "FUJIN Rumble" (a play on the wind god Fūjin) and a desire to write an uptempo Japanese-flavored techno piece. The song arrived in maimai ORANGE on November 26, 2014 with a staggered release, early access at AOU-affiliated arcades, followed by a general rollout on February 16, 2015. Over subsequent maimai versions its difficulty ratings and genre classification have shifted (from COLLABO to GAME & VARIETY), but its identity as a fast, driving wind-element anthem has remained intact.

Trivia

  • FUJIN Rumble's MASTER chart (982 Tap notes out of 1000 total) was the first chart in maimai history to break the 1,000-note barrier, a milestone that set a new ceiling for density in the series at the time.
  • The song was one of four 'element' entries in the first Tenkaichi Otogesai (2014). The other block songs were themed around fire, water, and earth, contributed by the other participating rhythm-game franchises.
  • COSIO (ZUNTATA) has described the track as 'wafū techno' (和風テクノ, Japanese-style techno), blending pentatonic melodic motifs with a high-BPM electronic backdrop.
  • The title 'FUJIN Rumble' references Fūjin (風神), the Japanese god of wind, while 'Rumble' evokes the low-end power and physical rumble of a roller coaster.
  • The MASTER chart was designed by 某S氏 (Bō S-shi), a long-time maimai notes designer whose identity is kept pseudonymous in official credits. The EXPERT chart was designed by rioN, another prolific charter in the maimai ecosystem.
  • A remix by t+pazolite titled 'FUJIN Rumble (tpz Overheat Remix)' appears on the GROOVE COASTER ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK BOOST album. A second remix by MASAKI(ZUNTATA) titled 'FUJIN Rumble MASAKI Remix' was released on TAITO's Groove anthem party album. COSIO himself also produced a self-remix for the ZUNTATA 30th anniversary compilation reZonance World.
  • FUJIN Rumble was added simultaneously to three other rhythm games on the same date, jubeat saucer fulfill (KONAMI), Taiko no Tatsujin Kimidori Ver. (Bandai Namco), and GROOVE COASTER EX (TAITO), making it one of the most widely circulated crossovers of the 2014 event.
  • The song's genre in maimai fluctuated across versions: originally labeled COLLABO in ORANGE/ORANGE+, it was reclassified as GAME & VARIETY from PiNK onward, briefly became VARIETY in early でらっくす, then returned to GAME & VARIETY from でらっくす PLUS onward.
  • After its early-access period, FUJIN Rumble became available to all regions including international and Chinese cabinets, and its artist credit remained unchanged in Asian English localizations.
